What to find in an Archery Shop

Date Posted:22 September 2022

Archery is an enjoyable sport for all ages and genders. You don't require great physical strength or special skill sets to get started....all you need is a bow and some arrows and a few accessories and you're on your way!

Buying said archery equipment way be easy, all you have to do is do a quick Google search and there are plenty of retailers selling bows, arrows and archery related items. But how do you know if the bow you want to buy online is the correct one for you? Or are the really cheap arrows you're looking at ideal for the bow you will be shooting it from? One thing to remember about archery is that it's not a 'one size fits all' activity. This is where the humble archery shop comes into play.

Professionally run archery shops physically stock a great range of bows, arrows, archery accessories and archery related items at competitive prices.

Types of bows stocked:

  • Compound Bows: Compound bows use a levering system of cables and pulleys (cams) to bend the limbs as the bow is drawn back. Compound bows can be used for target shooting, bowhunting, field archery and recreational archery.

  • Recurve Bows: Recurve bows are a type of bow where the limbs curve away from the archer when the bow is unstrung. A recurve bow stores more energy and delivers that energy more efficiently compared to straight limb bows. There are many types of recurve bows on the market and can be used for target archery, field archery, bowhunting and recreational archery as well as bowfishing. Recurve bows are used in the Olympic Games.

  • Longbows: Longbows, also known as flatbows (depending on it's construction type) is a type of bow that features a long overall length and fairly stright limbs, not recurved. Factory made longbows are generally 68 inches long. Longbows can be used for all kinds of archery including bowhunting.

Arrows:

Archery shops should stock a large range of arrows suitable for the type of bow you use or will be using. Carbon arrows are the most commono type of arrow bought now in Australia however aluminium and wood arrows still remain popular.

Archery Accessories:

Archery accessories can define any archery related product, such as armguards, gloves, sights, stabilizers just to name a few. There are hundreds of different types of archery accessories, staff from an archery shop can help you choose which items you need for a better archery experience.

Targets:

Obviously you need a designated target to shoot at with your bow and arrow set. Archery shops can stock a range of different styles of targets including target blocks, 3D targets and target faces. Hoddywell Archery Park features a 15 target field trail as well as a 15m - 80m target lane.

Is the product actually in stock?

When purchasing archery product online or even in-store you may hear terms like 'it's available', 'we can get it in for you' or 'it's in our warehouse'. These terms would suggest that the product that you're after isn't in stock. If you wish to proceed with the purchase, ask the staff member how long will it take to get in. In most cases products that aren't in stock can take several weeks or even a couple of months to arrive.

At Hoddywell Archery we always strive to have a large range of archery equipment in stock.
